Bruno Mars: The Wunderkind of American Music Scene

Peter Gene Hernandez more popularly known as Bruno Mars is an American singer-songwriter born on October 8, 1985 in Honolulu Hawaii.  He shot to prominence when B.O.B’s song “Nothing on You” became a big hit in 2010 in which Bruno was featured. He followed it up when another song “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy which went to become a worldwide hit together with the song by B.O.B.  Bruno Mars co-wrote the song with Travie.  In that same year, Bruno Mars released his own music album entitled “Doo-Wops and Hooligans.”  Three singles from that album when on to become chart toppers for Billboard Hot 100 namely:  Just the Way You Are, Grenade and Lazy Song.  In 2012, Bruno releases his second music album Unorthodox Jukebox which produced three international hit songs worldwide, namely, "Locked out of Heaven",  "When I was your Man"and "Treasure". Bruno Mars got his nickname after the wrestler "Bruno Sammartino."  But here's the interesting anecdote of how Bruno got his nickname. According to the story, Bruno was the kind of kid who uses his brute force to get away with what he wants while he still a toddler. He grew up to be a confident and strong-willed kid, so his Mom and Daddy called him Bruno after the famous WWE wrestler, which kind of stuck until today. He came up with the Mars name when girls commented that he is out of this world.

Bruno Mars was struggling and frustrated when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream, but success eluded him early on.  To make ends meet, he decided to write songs for other artists in order to get his foot in the door of recording labels.   That proved to be the best move for Bruno mars when his songs became instant hits. He wrote the Flo Rida's hit song "Right 'Round," Brandy's "Long Distance" and Travie McCoys "Billionaire."  He even co-wrote and produced the theme song for the FIFA 2010 World Cup entitled, "Wavin Flag" by K, Naan.

Bruno Mars started performing he was merely four years old. His parents, Uncles and Aunts from his mother's side were all performers so Bruno was surrounded by people who made performing a living. He was encouraged by an Uncle to do an Elvis Presley impersonation and became good at it that he was one of the most popular members in the family.  He went on to pick up the skill to play different musical instrument without receiving any formal training because he recounted, he was surrounded by his family who all specialize in one instrument or the other. In fact, Bruno can play the piano, the guitar, keyboard and the drum set. He continued to perform with the family until his adolescence. In addition to his Levis impersonation, he also impersonated Michael Jackson to variety to his repertoire.

Bruno Mars is known for blending hip-hop, singable pop melodies and uplifting lyrics.  He is also a good dancer, which he honed while performing with the family back in his Hawaii days.  His father was the percussionist while his mother played the hula and played vocals in the band as well.
